Post-Mortem: Solving History's Great Medical Mysteries
by Philip A. Mackowiak
from The American College of Physicians
Their lives changed history. Their deaths were mysteries, until now! Post-Mortem: Solving History's Great Medical Mysteries by Philip A. Mackowiak, MD, FACP, examines the controversial lives and deaths of 12 famous men and women. Post-Mortem answers vexing questions such as: Was Alexander the Great a victim of West Nile virus? What caused the gruesome final illness of King Herod? Was Joan of Arc mentally ill during her heresy trial? Could syphillis have made Beethoven deaf? Did Edgar Allan Poe drink himself to death? This new book also investigates the mysterious deaths of the Egyptian Pharaoh Akhenaten, the Greek statesman and general Pericles, the Roman Emperor Claudius, Christopher Columbus, Mozart, Florence Nightingale, and Booker T. Washington. Post-Mortem traces 3,500 years of medical history from the perspective of what contemporary physicians thought about the diseases of their renowned patients and how they might have treated them. It follows the case history format of today's clinical pathologic conferences, describing the characteristics of the illnesses in question, and bringing to life the medical history, social history, family history, and physical examination of their famous victims. Post-Mortem then sifts through the medical evidence, testing a wide range of diagnostic theories against the known facts and today's best scientific research, to arrive at the diagnosis most consistent with the illness described in the historic record.
Introduction to Reference Sources in the Health Sciences, Fifth Edition
from Neal-Schuman Publishers
This new edition of the standard guide to health sciences sources is essential for students, librarians, and health professionals. Prepared with the Medical Library Association, this completely updated and revised fifth edition lists classic and up-to-the-minute print resources and helps librarians to meet customers changing expectations for electronic versions of traditionally print reference sources, new reliable electronic only resources, and resources that they can access from their home computers through freely available Web sites or through library licenses. The authors address questions librarians need to consider in developing and maintaining their reference collections in both the print and electronic environments, focusing on works that can be considered foundation or basic works. New contributors including Jean Blackwell, Feili Tu, Katherine Schilling and Tom Flemming provide fresh takes on organization and management of the reference collection; bibliographic sources for periodicals; indexing, abstracting, and digital database resources; U.S. government documents and technical reports; conferences, reviews, and translations; terminology; handbooks and manuals; drug information sources; and grant sources. Other chapters cover bibliographic sources for monographs, consumer health sources, medical and health statistics, directories and biographical sources, and history sources.

The American Field Service Archives of World War I, 1914-1917 (Bibliographies and Indexes in World History)
from Greenwood Press
This descriptive inventory of the American Field Service in World War I begins with documents prior to the actual date of operation of the American Field Service in France--April 1915--and ends in September 1917 when the AFS was militarized by the U.S. Army and ceased to exist as an independent body for the duration of the war. The AFS ambulance service was the model for the foundation of the American Army Ambulance Service of 1917, and the AFS Transport Corps served as the prototype of the U.S. Army Motor Transport Corps. Included here are over fifty unique, previously unpublished photos from the AFS photographic archives. Many of these rare historical photographs were donated by World War I ambulance and motor transport drivers. These archives enhance the reader's understanding of the activity of the AFS during that period and document the role of volunteer American ambulance drivers serving with the French armies in World War I prior to U.S. entry in 1917. This book is made possible by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission and is intended both as a guide to the AFS archives and as an invitation to use the papers for a closer understanding of American and French-American relations during World War I. Series descriptions, a concise historical rendering of the AFS from 1914-1917, an essay on sources, and box and folder lists are included. An index and information on the photographic archives complete what will prove an invaluable resource for students and scholars of medical services and of military history, particularly World War I.
